Park Slope is the largest historic district in the city, and most of it was wired before the district existed. Four-story brownstones with a rental on the garden floor, limestones with the original plaster still up, co-ops on Prospect Park West with alteration agreements, and a lot of gut renovations in progress on any given block. Brooklyn Electrician is a few minutes east on Eastern Parkway.

Electrical Work Built for Park Slope Brownstones and Renovations
Most of our Park Slope calls come from a renovation. The walls are open, the kitchen is moving to the garden level, and the 100-amp service that fed a single family in 1960 now has to run a heat pump, an induction range, two baths and a dryer. Our electricians run the load calculation first and size the service for the house you are building, see Electrical Panel Upgrade.
The blocks between Seventh Avenue and the park are 1880s to 1910s row houses with knob-and-tube on the upper floors and cloth wiring behind the parlor cornices. When the walls are open, a full rewire is the obvious move. When they are not, a partial rewire targets the kitchen, the baths and whatever still has knob-and-tube, see Electrical Wiring and Rewiring.
The prewar co-ops on Prospect Park West, Eighth Avenue and Plaza Street are apartment subpanels fed from a riser, with a board, a managing agent and an engineer between you and the work.
DOB Permits, Landmark Rules and Co-op Boards in Park Slope
Every panel, service and new circuit gets a DOB electrical permit and an inspection, and in a renovation the electrical permit rides along with the architect's filing. Inside the historic district, exterior fixtures, conduit on the facade and anything visible from the street go through landmark review first. We size stoop lights and sconces to pass it.
Co-op boards want a certificate of insurance, a licensed master electrician's license number, an engineer's letter for anything on the riser, and work hours that end by four. Alteration agreements get read before the estimate. A stop-work order mid-renovation is the expensive version of skipping the permit.
Con Edison coordination covers the service entrance, the meter pan and the drop on the few blocks that still have overhead service. We file early because Con Ed is usually the long pole.
Panels, Rewiring and Repairs Tailored to Park Slope Houses
A 200-amp service with a subpanel on the top floor is the standard brownstone upgrade here, and a 400-amp service shows up when the house is going all-electric. Grounding to the water main and ground rods, AFCI protection on the new circuits, whole-house surge protection at the panel, see Surge Protection Installation.
Rewiring without wrecking plaster is the skill Park Slope owners pay for. Our electricians fish through closets, the stair stringer cavity and old gas pipe chases, and they cut small square openings a plasterer patches in an hour. Medallions stay. Cornices stay.
Repairs run to lost neutrals, outlets dead on one floor, lights dimming when the AC starts, and the AFCI breaker a previous electrician installed on a circuit with a real fault, see Electrical Repair. Buyers get a written Electrical Inspection with photos of every box before the contract is signed.
Lighting, Outlets, EV Chargers and Generators for Park Slope Homes and Businesses
Lighting in a parlor with 12-foot ceilings is a layout problem first. Wafer recessed lights that leave the joists alone, pendants and chandeliers on dimmers, under-cabinet LEDs in the new kitchen, exterior sconces sized for the landmark review, see Lighting Installation. Ceiling fans through the medallions on fan-rated boxes, see Ceiling Fan Installation. Outlets every four feet on the counter, GFCI in every bath, USB receptacles by the beds, a dedicated circuit for the home office, see Outlet and Switch Installation.
Rear-yard parking and the garages in the South Slope are adding Level 2 charging, with load management where the service is tight, see EV Charger Installation. Houses near the Gowanus edge want backup power for the sump pump, see Generator Installation. Restaurants on Fifth Avenue get dedicated kitchen circuits and the DOB sign-off before the opening, see Commercial Electrical Services.
Emergency Electricians, Inspections and How to Get Started in Park Slope
A burning smell at the cellar panel, a sparking outlet in the garden apartment, half the house dark while the other half flickers, see Emergency Electrician. The truck comes from Brooklyn Ave, straight down Eastern Parkway.
For everything else, call (929) 460-9789 or send the form above. A licensed electrician visits, opens the panel and leaves a written price with the permit, the landmark items and the Con Ed items listed. We cover Crown Heights across the Parkway and Flatbush across the park the same way.
