Lightning is the surge people picture. The surge that kills a mini-split control board is usually Con Edison switching the grid, or the power coming back on after an outage, or the compressor on your own refrigerator cycling five hundred times a day. Brooklyn Electrician installs whole-house surge protection in Crown Heights, Flatbush, Park Slope, Greenpoint and Bed-Stuy.
One device at the panel covers every circuit in the house. Call (929) 460-9789 or send the form above for a free estimate.

Surge Protection Built for Brooklyn Homes and Buildings
A panel-mounted surge protector clamps a voltage spike before it reaches the circuits. It is a Type 2 device on a dedicated two-pole breaker, mounted as close to the bus as the panel allows, with leads kept short because every extra inch of wire lets more of the surge through.
The protector is only as good as the ground under it. Many Brooklyn houses still rely on a water pipe bond alone, so our electricians verify the grounding electrode system first and add rods where the code calls for them.
Newer electrical code editions call for a surge protective device at the service, and we put one on every panel we upgrade, see Electrical Panel Upgrade.
Our Surge Protection Installation Process, Step by Step
- 1
Panel check. Breaker space, bus condition, panel brand, and whether a matching breaker exists.
- 2
Grounding verification. Water pipe bond, ground rods and the bonding jumper tested and corrected.
- 3
Device selection. Surge current rating, clamping voltage and a replaceable module, matched to the panel.
- 4
Mount and wire. Protector mounted beside the panel, short leads, dedicated breaker, indicator visible.
- 5
Point-of-use layer. Protected receptacles or strips for the TV, the office and the networking gear, see Outlet and Switch Installation.
- 6
Test and document. Indicator confirmed, breaker labeled, protector logged on the panel schedule.
Surge Protection Options That Fit Brooklyn Properties
A Type 2 whole-house protector for a single panel. Protectors on each subpanel in a two-family or a co-op. Type 1 devices at the service entrance for buildings with heavy exposure. Dedicated protection for the heat pump, the mini-splits and the induction range, the three most expensive boards in the house. Protected circuits for the charger, see EV Charger Installation, and for the transfer switch on a standby unit, see Generator Installation. Coaxial and ethernet surge protection at the point of entry, since surges ride data lines too.
What Affects the Cost of Surge Protection in Brooklyn
Device rating.
A higher surge current rating and a replaceable module cost more and last longer.
Breaker availability.
A full panel means a tandem solution or a panel change.
Grounding work.
Adding rods and a bonding jumper is extra labor, and the protector is useless without it.
Point-of-use count.
Each protected receptacle or strip is a line item.
Bundling.
Installed during a panel upgrade, the protector is the cheapest electrical work on the invoice.
Local Conditions Our Electricians Work Around in Brooklyn, NY
Grid switching.
Con Edison's network switches create small surges all day, and old electronics feel every one.
Outage restoration.
Power coming back after a summer outage is the single biggest surge event most houses see.
Water pipe grounds.
Plastic water service replacements leave the old pipe bond grounding nothing. We test and add rods.
Full panels.
Many prewar panels have no spare slots, so the protector gets wired to a space we create.
Preventing and Solving Common Surge Problems
Mini-split or heat pump board dead after a storm.
Classic surge damage. A whole-house unit prevents the next one.
Electronics failing one at a time.
Repeated small surges from motors. Point-of-use protection on the sensitive gear.
Protector indicator light off.
The module absorbed what it could and needs replacing.
Flickering after an outage.
Possibly a loose neutral, which a surge protector will not fix, see Electrical Repair.
Not sure what is protected.
An Electrical Inspection maps it.
